Game 1
Salem, MA -- Junior Joe Galindo fired a three-hitter to lead the Salem State Vikings past the Mass Maritime Buccaneers 9-1 in game one of a scheduled doubleheader at the Central Campus Baseball Field.
Galindo allowed only three hits and one earned run while striking out nine to pick up his third win of the year.
Salem State (12-14, 2-5) jumped on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first. Troy Ingemi (Malden, MA) led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single by Chris Cocci (Wakefield, RI). Following a steal by Cocci Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA) drove in the second run with an RBI ground out.
Mass Maritime (6-12, 2-5) picked up a run in the top of the second to cut the lead to 2-1. Joe Albano (Agawam, MA) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Following two walks by starter Joe Galindo (Monument, CO), Tyler Genereux (Duxbury, MA) was hit by a pitch to force in the first run of the game for the Buccaneers.
The Vikings plated three more runs in the second inning. Ingemi singled and went to third on a double by Chris Cocci (Wakefield, RI). Steve Mucci (Walkill, NY) followed with a two-run base hit to make the score 5-1. Mass Maritime prevented an even bigger inning when first baseman Nick Levitre (Grafton, MA) threw out Evan Valcourt (Salisbury, MA) at the plate when he tried to score on a sacrifice bunt attempt by catcher Matt Gusdorf (Reston, VA)
Galindo shook off his early wildness by striking out four of the next seven batters through the third and fourth innings.
Aram Mulhern (Taunton, MA) registered the first hit of the game with a single in the fourth inning.
The Vikings threatened again in the fifth. Sam Perkins who finished 2-for-4 and Galindo led off the inning with back-to-back singles. However, Corey Murphy (East Wareham, MA) prevented further damage thanks to a great diving grab by left fielder Greg Wiggin (Marshfield, MA).
Mass Maritime stranded two runner in the top of the sixth. Albano and William Shouldice (Rutland, VT) each provided base hits. However, a great stab by Cocci on a ball up the middle prevented any runs from scoring.
Salem State opened up the game in the bottom of the sixth. Ingemi reached base for the fourth time with a walk. After a base hit by Cocci and a walk to Mucci, Kane belted a two-run single to make the score 8-1. The Vikings added their final run on a passed ball after reloading the bases to make the final score 9-1.
Ingemi and Cocci combined to go 6-for-6 at the top of the order, reaching base eight times for the Vikings with four singles, a double and triple and two walks.
Ryan Kane went 1-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Corey Murphy (East Wareham,MA), who took the loss pitched five innings allowing nine runs on thirteen hits with one strikeout to drop to 2-3 on the year.
Game 2
Salem, MA -- Sophomore Matt Kerr allowed only three runs in six and one third innings pitched while striking out nine as the Salem State Vikings completed a doubleheader sweep of Mass Maritime, defeating the Buccaneers 7-3 in game two.
Kerr evened his record at 3-3 on the year after giving up 10 hits without allowing a walk.
Mass Maritime (6-13, 2-6) went on top 1-0 in the top of the first thanks to a triple by Andrew Saari (Framingham, MA) and a run producing single by Joe Albano (Agawam, MA).
Salem State (13-14, 3-5) rallied in the bottom of the half inning scoring four times. Chris Cocci doubled with one out and following a walk to Steve Mucci (Walkill, NY) and a single by Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA), Sam Perkins (Milford, MA) tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field. Joe Galindo (Monument, CO) plated another run with a single before Evan Valcourt (Salisbury, MA) ripped a two-run triple to make the score 4-1.
Starter Matt Kerr (East Freetown, MA.) worked out of trouble in the second inning striking out the side after giving up back-to-back base hits to Wil Rodriguez (Lowell, MA) and Corey Murphy (East Wareham, MA).
The Vikings added two more runs in the second on an RBI single by Kane and a wild pitch to give the Vikings a 6-1 lead.
Mass Maritime reduced the deficit to 6-3 in the third on an RBI double by Joe Albano (Agawam, MA) and a run scoring single by Ross Hickey (Centerville, MA) despite a great diving stop by Cocci at second base.
Salem State pushed across another run in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead. After a base hit by Valcourt Buccaneer pitcher David Hike (Riverview, Fla) walked three consecutive batters to force in a run.
Hike suffered the loss, pitching five innings and giving up 10 hits and seven runs with five walks and five strikeouts.
Andrew Guido (Peabody,MA) recorded the last two outs to preserve the victory.
Albano went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI's for Mass Maritime, which has now lost four straight games. Cocci collected two more hits with a walk to go a combined 5-for-6 with two walks and five runs scored in the doubleheader.
Salem State is back in action at home tomorrow April 20th when they host Gordon College at 3:00 PM. Mass Maritime will travel to Lasell College on Wednesday April 21st for a 3:30 game.
