Vikings tie Lancers 2-2
2010 Ice hockey
Auburn, MA --- Salem State junior Mike Genovese (Hingham, MA) tallied a pair of goals while Worcester State senior Mark Rintel (Oakland Gardens, NY) registered a pair of assists as both teams drew to an overtime 2-2 tie this evening in MASCAC Men's ice hockey action at Horgan Memorial Rink.

With the tie, the Vikings move to 8-7-3 and 7-2-3 in the MASCAC while the Lancers snap a two-game skid to make their record 5-11-1 and 3-8-1 in the conference.

Genovese helped SSC go up 1-0 at 6:34 after he received the puck from classmate Matt Johnson (Lynn, MA). Worcester State soon knotted the score three minutes later on a power play goal as sophomore John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA) recorded his third marker of the season on assists by Rintel and second-year Andrew Brady (Oreland, PA).

To start off the second frame, the Lancers took the 2-1 lead at 6:16 as they made the Vikings pay again with the extra man advantage. Sophomore Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, PA) lit up the siren for WSC as he was aided by Rintel and junior Chris Wallin (Avon, CT).

The rest of the stanza would see Worcester State kill off two penalties and Salem State would hold off three before the visitors tied the score on Genovese's sixth goal of the year. Johnson and junior Sam Cannata (Bozeman, MT) would each pick up a point with helpers on the play.

Salem State had a frustrating third period and overtime as they out shot WSC 19-4 (4-0 in OT) and had the Lancers in the penalty box twice, both midway through the third frame. The Vikings were 0-for-8 for the game with the extra-man edge.

Freshman Zach Hansen (Dexter, MI) made 44 saves in the cage for the Lancers while his classmate and counterpart, Andrew Knight (Calgary, Alberta), stopped 32 of the 34 shots he saw in his first career decision.

Both teams will entertain MASCAC opponents in the afternoon on Saturday. WSC hosts Plymouth State at 4:30 while the Vikings entertain UMass Dartmouth at 2 o'clock.
