WESTFIELD, Mass. – Salem State overcame a two-goal second period deficit to tie Westfield State, 2-2, in overtime in a key MASCAC men’s ice hockey game on Saturday evening, Feb. 20.
Second-place Salem State is 10-3-4 in the MASCAC and 12-8-4 overall, while Westfield State is 9-4-3 and 12-8-3.
The Owls scored two goals in a 37-second span to take a 2-0 second-period advantage. Dennis Zak scored on a breakaway, beating Salem goalie Sam Avoine inside the left post 12:31 into the period. Westfield freshman Danny Kaufman then scored a power play goal, with assists from Zak and Casey Mignone.
The Vikings sliced the lead in half on Michael Genovese’s goal with 4:39 remaining in the second stanza.
The game-tying goal was scored by Casey Terreri with 6:12 left in the third period as his shot from the right side deflected off a Westfield defender’s stick and fluttered past Owl goalie Ray Monroe inside the left post.
Westfield had an opportunity to win the game in regulation but freshman Lucas Romero’s breakaway shot was high with one second remaining.
Both goalie had stellar games, Monroe with 40 saves and Avoine with 27 stops.
