Vikings Trounce Framingham 9-2

Framingham, Mass. — The Salem State College ice hockey team scored six goals in the final period to defeat the Framingham State Rams 9-2 on the road tonight at Loring Arena in Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) ice hockey action. With the win, the Vikings improve to 12-8-3 on the season and 10-3-3 in the MASCAC, while the Rams fall to 2-18-2 overall and 2-13-1 in conference

Freshmen Nick Lampson (Groton, Mass.) and Matt Kenline (Yarmouth, Mass.) led the Vikings with two goals apiece, while Casey Terreri (Warwick, RI) added three assists. Chris MacInnis (Waltham, Mass.), Dan Smolinsky (Plymouth, Mass.) and Samuel Cannata (Bozeman, MT) picked up a goal and an assist each, while Derek Crocker (Wakefield, Mass.), Damen Nisula (Gardner, Mass.), and Brett Noll (Sandwich, Mass.) added two assists apiece.

Salem State took the early lead with two goals in the first period and then added third midway through the second for a 3-0 lead. The Rams battled back and Eric Walsh (Haverhill, Mass.) scored his fifth of the season at 17:26 to pull the Rams back within two goals (3-1) heading into the third period.

Salem State’s offense erupted for six goals in the third period including a shorthanded tally by Smolinsky at 5:04 to push the lead back to three goals. Chad Johnson (Lynn, Mass.) gave the Vikings a 5-1 lead less than two minutes later with a power play goal.

The Vikings would add two more goals less than twenty seconds apart as Lampson and Cannata scored at 9:40 and 9:57. Kenline and Lampson would finish the scoring for the Vikings with their goals at 12:41 and 13:28.

Senior forward Brett Casavant (Gardner, Mass.) scored a power play goal and his eighth goal of the season at 17:24 to reach the final margin.

The Vikings outshot the Rams 49-27 in the game as Framingham State goalie Terence Sullivan (Shirley, Mass.) made 34 saves. Sam Avoine (Quebec, Canada) picked up the win for Salem State in net as he made 23 saves.

Both teams continue with MASCAC action on Saturday as the Rams host Plymouth State at 7:30 p.m., and the Vikings travel to Westfield State at 5:35 p.m.
