Fitchburg, MA -- Danielle Jenkins scored a game-high 32 points and added 17 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Fitchburg State Falcons defeated the Salem State Lady Vikings 66-64 in a MASCAC conference game on Saturday.
The win improved the Falcons record to 10-13, 4-6 in conference, while Salem State dropped to 16-7, 7-3 in the MASCAC.
Jenkins, who shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the field in the first half, almost had a double-double before intermission with 18 points and nine rebounds as Salem State built a three point lead, 37-34, at the end of one period.
The largest lead either team could build was six points in the second, and the Lady Vikings held a two-point advantage, 61-59 on a Jenkins basket with 2:39 remaining. Kim Duprey answered with a three pointer to give Fitchburg State a one point margin at 62-61 and the Falcons increased that to four points with 5 seconds remaining. Erica Batchelder then hit a pair of free throws to make the score 66-64, and Salem State had one final chance to tie the game after Kelley Rogers missed the front end of a one-and-one. However, Melissa Proffitt came up with a steal to preserve the win.
Batchelder finished with 12 points and Barry nine as Salem State remains in second place in the MASCAC conference.
