Salem, Ma – Wil Hartigan (Arlington, MA) scored a goal and an assist to lead the Colby College Mules past the Salem State Vikings 5-3 in a non-conference game at Rockett Arena on Monday night.

Hartigan, who scored his first goal of the season, tallied the game-winner on an assist by Chris Buonomo (Edison, NJ) 2:36 into the third period to put Colby College ahead 4-0.

The Mules (7-2), which have now won six games in a row, held an early 2-0 lead in the first period. The goals came from the sticks of Mike Doherty (Lynnfield, MA) and Matt Rappaport (Livingston, NJ). Colby opened the game up in the second period on a goal by Buonomo that gave the Mules a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Salem State (6-3-1) did not back down to Colby’s challenge. The Vikings responded with three unanswered goals. The first one came early in the third period by Nick Lampson (Groton, MA) who added his team-high eighth goal of the season. After backup goalie Jared Tepper (Monroe Township, NJ) entered the game, Matt Kenline (Yarmouth, MA) tallied the second Salem State goal seconds after finishing a stint in the penalty box. Just under two minutes later, captain Chris MacInnis (Waltham, MA) continued the rally with the third Viking’s goal at the 6:24 mark to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Starting goalie Cody McKinney (Weston, FL) re-entered the game to secure the victory for the Mules. Mckinney saved 29 of the 30 shots against he faced. Salem State goaltender Sam Avione (Ste-Perpetue, Quebec), who suffered his first loss of the season, finished with 23 saves on 28 shots against.

The Salem State College Vikings will face off next against the New England College Pilgrims in Heinniker, NH on Wednesday January 6, at 7:00 pm.
