Vikings skate to 2-2 tie
2010 ice hockey
Salem, MA - Brett Casavant (Gardner, MA) scored a power-play goal with 14 seconds remaining in regulation to help the Framingham State Rams earn a 2-2 tie against the Salem State Vikings on Saturday afternoon.

Casavant, who scored his sixth goal of the season, took a feed from Eric Walsh (Haverhill, MA) off the face-off and ripped a shot past goalie Sam Avoine (Ste-Perpetue, Quebec).

Salem State, which has now dropped three straight games, fell to 7-6-2 overall and, 6-2-2 in the MASCAC conference. Framingham State snapped a nine-game losing streak and improved to 1-12-2, and 1-8-1 in conference.

The Vikings opened up fast and jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead. Mike Genovese (Hingham, MA) scored 8:52 into the period to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Nick Lampson (Groton, MA), scored his ninth goal of the season five and a half minutes later to give Salem State a 2-0 cushion at the end of the first period. The Vikings outshot the Rams 26-6 in the period, but goalie William Sais (Bloomington, MN) did not falter, giving Framingham State a chance to stay in the game.

Joseph Hurley (Charlestown, MA) scored on an assist from Blair Nickerson (Bevelry, MA) at 5:08 in the second period to cut the Salem State lead to 2-1. Despite owning a huge advantage in shots (52-20), including 12-5 in the third period, the Vikings could not fluster Sais (50 saves), and settled for a 2-2 tie

Avoine, who fell to 2-3-1 in goal made 18 stops.

The Vikings will travel to Bowdoin on Tuesday, January 26th for 8:00 PM game, while Framingham State goes to Plymouth State next Thursday for a 6:00 PM game.
