Barbosa Boots Salem State Into MASCAC Championship
Barbosa
(Bridgewater, Mass.) – Senior Jared Barbosa (Lowell, Mass.) scored twice to lead the No.4 seed Salem State Vikings to an upset victory over top seed Bridgewater State in the MASCAC Conference tournament semifinals. Barbosa notched two second period scores to lift Salem State to a 3-1 win over the top- ranked Bears.

The teams played to a draw in the first half as Viking goalie Luis Marques (Fall River, Mass.) kept Bridgewater State off the scoreboard by stopping four of 11 shots in the period.

Barbosa put Salem State on top at the 57:36 mark when he scored an unassisted goal to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

Luke Brewer (Edgartown, Mass.) tied the game on a penalty kick at the 66:55 mark to give the Bears a spark.

Barbosa killed any momentum the home team gained, when he put a shot past goalie Ryan Siefert (Ludlow, Mass.) to give Salem State a 2-1 advantage less than five minutes later. Andrew Angus (Boston, Mass.) iced the game for the Vikings when he scored his ninth goal of the season at the 81:16 mark to give the visitors a comfortable 3-1 lead.

Luis Marques made five saves to earn his fourth win of the season. Siefert suffered the loss in goal for Bridgewater State.

Bridgewater State outshot Salem State 17-15 and had an eight to four advantage in corner kicks.

Salem State improved to 8-8 on the year, while the Bears finished their season with a 9-5-3 record.

The Vikings will travel to No. 2 seed Westfield State for the MASCAC championship on Saturday, November 7th.
