Amherst College advances to 2nd round to play host York College

(York, PA) - The Amherst College Lord Jeffs defeated the Salem State College Vikings, 4-0 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships at York College on Saturday afternoon.
Amherst College (12-3-1), ranked 24th in the country, took an early 1-0 lead when Ian Rothkopf (Harvard, MA) took a feed from Chris Devine (Auburn, MA) from the right side and flicked a shot past Salem State goalie Luis Marques (Fall River, MA). The Lord Jeffs held a one-goal advantge until halftime, outshooting the Vikings 7-5 in the opening period.
Salem State (9-9) had limited scoring opportunities in the first half, putting just one shot on goal.
Amherst took control of the game in the second period, scoring three times to breeze to a 4-0 shutout win.
Matt Lewis (Wayland, MA) increased the lead for the Lord Jeffs, when he took a pass from Sam Kaplan (Brunswick, ME) to score on a free kick with just over four minutes gone by in the second half. Chris Lerner (Canton, MA) broke open the game in the 77th minute when he knocked in a 20-footer off the post give Amherst a 3-0 lead.
Chris Linsmayer ( Denver, CO) closed out the scoring, with his third goal of the season at the 85:24 mark to make the final margin 4-0.
Amherst will face host York College in the second round on Sunday, November 15th at 1:00 PM.
Lennard Kocacs (Wolfersdorf, Germany) registered four saves to pick up the victory. Marques, who also made four stops suffered the loss.
The Lord Jeffs held a 17-13 advantage in shots and took five more corner kicks than the Vikings.
