Rams Shutout Lady Vikings 1-0
field hockey

Framingham, Mass. — The Framingham State College field hockey team closed out the regular season today with a 1-0 shutout win over Salem State College in Little East Conference field hockey action at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Rams improve to 9-2 in conference and with a UMass Dartmouth loss tomorrow would own a share of the LEC regular season championship. They finish the regular season with a school record 14 wins and just three losses overall. The loss drops the Vikings back to .500 overall at 8-8 and 4-7 in the Little East. Both teams await the results of the remaining conference games tomorrow to find out their respective seeds and opponents in the upcoming Little East Tournament which begins next Tuesday.

The Rams controlled the pace of play in the game as they outshot the Vikings 19-3 in the contest and held a 13-2 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Salem State goalie Jessica McKenna (Rowley, Mass.) kept the Rams off the scoreboard until late in the game and kept the Vikings in the game as she was outstanding making 10 saves in the game.

In the 56th minute the Rams were finally able to capitalize on a penalty corner and break into the scoring column. Freshman Erica Fisher (Putnam Valley, NY) sent the corner pass to the top of the circle to senior midfielder Katie Wotherspoon (Stafford, Conn.). Wotherspoon redirected the ball to junior Kristen Sacco (Mendon, Mass.), the Rams leading scorer this season, who fired a shot at the net that Fisher tipped into the back of the cage for what proved to be the game winner. The goal was the seventh of the season for Fisher.

The Rams were able to hold off a late surge by Vikings to pick up the win. Junior Allesha Kenyon (Westford, Mass.) made two saves and picked up her third shutout win of the season.
