Vikings Drop The Anchors 2-0
Barbosa
Senior Jared Barbosa's first period goal is all the Vikings need in shutout of Rhode Island College.

(Salem, MA) – Senior Jared Barbosa (Lowell, Mass.) scored midway through the first period, as the Salem State Vikings topped the Rhode Island College Anchorman, 2-0 in a non-conference game Tuesday night.

Barbosa, who notched his second goal of the year, scored on a pass from forward Raphael Santos (Boston, Mass.) to give Salem State (6-5) an early 1-0 lead. Both teams had very few offensive opportunities in the first half combining for just six shots on goal.

The Vikings defense carried the way in the second period as the Vikings controlled play in their end. Salem State had an opportunity early to extend their lead, but Rhode Island goalie Helder Faustino (Warwick, RI) stopped a shot at point blank range by Owen Quane (Weymouth, Mass.) to keep the deficit at one goal.

Salem Sate finally iced the game with less than ten minutes remaining as Youssef Benkirane (East Boston, Mass.) scored his first goal of the year on as assist from David Miller (Lancaster, PA) to make the score 2-0.

Faustino made four saves for Rhode Island College, which dropped to 5-6-2. Luis Marques (Fall River, Mass.), who got the start in goal, made three saves to improve to 2-1 on the year.

Salem State will play on Saturday, October 17th at Bridgewater State at 12:00 PM. Rhode Island College plays next at Eastern Connecticut State at 1:00 PM on Sunday, October 18th.
